Overview

The Subtotal Connector is how AI assistants connect to Subtotal. Add it to an assistant such as Claude, Grok, or Muse, and you can ask questions about your connections, purchases, items, retailers, products, and brands in plain language, right in the conversation. The connector can also manage your retailers, product groups and webhooks: the update_retailer tool enables or disables a retailer for your team and sets who sees it in Subtotal Link. It can also create, rename and delete your product groups and add or remove their products, and run the Event Simulator to create test connections and events. The webhook tools create, update and delete webhooks; a new webhook starts paused unless you ask for it to start delivering. Everything else it does is read-only. Use cases:
  • Analytics copilots that answer questions about customer behavior
  • Purchase data Q&A for support and operations teams
  • AI shopping assistants that reference real purchase history

How it works

The Subtotal Connector is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open standard AI assistants use to connect to outside tools and data. Any assistant that supports custom MCP connectors can use it with this server URL:
Step-by-step setup is available for Claude. For other assistants, add a custom connector in that assistant’s settings using the URL above.

Authentication

The Subtotal Connector uses OAuth. When you add it, you sign in with your Subtotal Dashboard account and choose a team, so there are no API keys to manage.

Security and limits

All queries are scoped to your team: you can only access your own team’s data. The following limits apply:
